What To Do
There are many types of handicrafts you can do. My passion back then was making felt dolls. I became interested after I saw some tutorials on making felt dolls on the YouTube channel.
First, you have to prepare a sewing kit, some coloured felt cloth and threads as well as cotton wool. Start with something simple, like sewing a fruit. Draw the template of a fruit on a piece of paper, place it on a piece of felt cloth folded into two, and cut it out accordingly. Then, sew the seams of the felt cloth together using neat stitches, leaving a gap big enough to stuff in some cotton wool. Complete by sewing up the gap. If you are confused, look up some videos which show clear instructions and steps you can follow.
Once you have gained the confidence, you may try your hand at making some of your favourite cartoon characters. I tried my hand at making Mr Bean’s teddy bear, besides sewing a mermaid, members of a famous Korean variety show, dolls wearing traditional costumes and many more. I was quite hooked on making them back then as it was the only activity that I could do without feeling stressed.
What Does It Do
During the initial stage of my relapse, I could only do a limited amount of activity as I was often in my world, zoning out. I had difficulty breathing and would get highly irritated and upset by the voices. It was tough and crying in frustration was the norm.
Sewing felt dolls calmed my troubled mind as I needed concentration to focus intently. It also allowed me to unleash my creativity. I felt free in my own space and in control, as I could make whatever dolls I wanted. It also helped to keep me occupied. It gave me something to look forward to each day.
How I Feel After Doing It
Due to my condition back then, I relied heavily on making felt dolls as it made me calm. I would spend hours on the activity as it was the only thing I could do. Every stitch made me focus on the present and helped to lessen my pain. As I began to see the finished product, I felt better, even if it was just a little at a time. I felt accomplished each time a felt doll is completed. It was especially rewarding if it resembled the actual character I wanted to make.
However, this is just an example of a type of handicraft you can pick up. There are many more, like making origami or paper art, costume jewellery, crocheting, sewing or painting. Decide on the handicraft you like and give it a try. You may discover your talent, who knows!
