1 Minute Breathing Exercises

Time

Throughout the day

Tools

A timer

What To Do

Set a timer for 1 minute. Practise breathing exercises. Inhale and count to 3. Exhale and count to 4. Repeat breathing exercises in a continuous rhythm for a whole minute.

What Does It Do

Play some soft background music. Slowly match your breathing process with the music. You will notice that your heartbeat rate will slowly lower until it reaches a state of calmness. Your mind will be at ease and feelings of anxiety will eventually subside.

How I Feel After Doing It

I feel much lighter after the breathing exercises. A sense of relief and calmness envelopes me. I do not feel the waves of anxiety creep up on me any longer. I can then concentrate on completing my other tasks on my To – Do list.

I can now better focus on something meaningful such as work or spending time with family, without being held back by my schizophrenia symptoms. My breathing exercises help me to gain control over the chaotic thoughts and worries in my mind, allowing me to take a step back and be more aware of my surroundings.
