What do Schizophrenics Hate?

Schizophrenics are often stigmatized by the public as dangerous, people with disability, unable to care for themselves, a nuisance or even a burden to society. As depicted in films and movies, they are often portrayed as dangerous and violent people. This is totally not true because we are just the same as other patients with chronic illness where we need medication to moderate our condition.

We may have dark, twisted and embarassing thoughts but this does not sum up our identity as a person. The thoughts do not define us whereas our actions might. Therefore, it is okay to have dark fantasies as long as you do not act upon them. This is certified by my psychiatrist with more than 20 years experience in treating schizophrenics. Just know that the intrusive thoughts are not you.

Schizophrenics hate it when they are facing emotional discomfort or distress and being told that it is fine and it will pass. Words like “You have it better than others” are also not well received. No one can really understand how tough it actually is for schizophrenics and the challenges that we face daily.

Delusions faced by schizophrenics are wrong beliefs yet feel so real. We try to make sense of what is happening around us and weave stories as well as draw conclusions from it. My therapist told me that some experienced real bad delusions that they may not even be able to have meals or even care for themselves during those trying times.

We also despise it when others try to convince us that the delusions are not real. This is not because we want to solidify our delusions but because it is usually very difficult to believe what others advise during that time. It would be better to let things ride out until the delusional phase is over. Often times, I get into arguments with my family members when they try to help me get over my delusions.

Schizophrenics also dislike it when we feel as though others are mocking or belittling them. We would prefer much consideration and empathy towards understanding our condition instead. After ten years of mind battle, I now begin to experience kindness from people of all walks of life wherever I go. Many are willing to show care and concern or they just mind their own business.

Schizophrenics generally feel as if the voices are testing them at all times. We feel as though the voices are acting as justice warriors trying to punish and restore order. It can be very distressing especially if we know that we are trying our very best daily. Things like getting up from bed and having a meal is already a great feat. I used to lie down on the sofa for hours with a heavy anchor-like feeling on the chest and not being able to get up at all. I then hear voices berating me saying I am lazy, not doing anything or not doing enough.

We face difficulties going outdoors and feel isolated by others. We would like to interact with others but the pressure of being cornered makes it very tough for us to do so. When this happens, it eats into us. At times, we dive deep into our delusions and may not be able to get out from it. We hate that it is such a challenge for us just to be outdoors.

It is also very tough when we meet difficult people who are not understanding enough. Words which are uttered in good faith could actually hurt or confuse us more. Our feelings are actually very difficult to gauge, even to ourselves. Therefore, a better understanding towards our condition is greatly appreciated.
