Read A Random Paragraph
Ruminating with intrusive thoughts can feel like you have lost touch with the ability to control your mind. It creates frustration, confusion and sadness.
This activity may be simple but powerful. The feeling of being able to manoeuvre your thought is an important reminder to reconnect with reality.
Tools
Book with a positive tone. Eg: Self-help, light-hearted stories
Steps
- Just turn to any of the pages. Point your finger at a certain paragraph or phrase on any of the pages.
- Focus on it. Carefully read the sentences.
- Find time to relate your life to these sentences. Try to apply those words throughout your day.
What Does It Do
Opening up a book you pick is an expression to yourself that you are in control. You have the power to choose your own paragraph or phrase that you fancy.
It helps when your mind is filled with intrusive thoughts you cannot control. The feeling of not being in control creates anxiety. This activity reminds you that you can influence your mind.
The second part of the activity allows you to ponder more about what you’ve read. Again, this builds on the confidence to have control of your own thoughts.
How Do I Feel After This Exercise
I love self-help books! This is usually the type of book I’ll grab for this activity. Books with quotes and poems work really well.
Personally, I feel very satisfied when pointing at a particular paragraph to highlight what I want to focus on. Oftentimes, I can relate to those motivating or positive texts. It gives me great excitement when I‘m able to do so.
This is a fun activity you can do when you feel down to lighten up your mood. I like doing it at the beginning of the day to set the mood right. Give it a try!
